Opening Prayer

1 Corinthians 14:26

What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up

Sermon

'In the year that King Uzziah died...' ~ A Key Moment ~

Watch Out!

  • Isaiah – the book - unveils the full dimensions of God’s judgement and … his salvation.

  • Israel - blind and deaf, a vineyard that will be trampled, a people devoid of justice or righteousness.

  • Although Israel has a foretaste of ‘The Day of the Lord’, it is actually all the nations that bear the full power of God’s judgement.

Hope!

  • God will rescue them from both political and spiritual oppression.

  • Israel's mighty creator will make streams spring up in the desert as he graciously leads them home.

  • Peace and safety mark this new messianic age.

  • A King descended from David will reign in righteousness and all nations will stream to Him!

The Change!

  • Isaiah – the prophet, goes through a change of ‘flavour’ and direction in chapter 6

  • Chapters 1-5 emphasize the faults and shortcomings of others:

    • Chapter 5: v18, v20, v21, v22.

    • The prophet thunders repeatedly!

    • You, and you, and you… ‘Woe unto you…!’

    • Judgement is on you!

  • Chapter 6 - He sees the Lord high and lifted up

  • In verse 5 he says: ‘Woe is me!' I am undone, I am unclean!

  • What a remarkable transformation takes place.

The Message of Transformation

  • Isaiah was changed as he made that confession

  • The Lord didn't condemn him - an angel takes a burning coal to place on his lips.

  • Not to burn, but to cauterize, cleanse, heal.

  • When Isaiah was conscious of who he really was, God could work with him!

  • From chapter 6 onwards Isaiah’s ministry is to prophesy about the grace that will be found in the coming Messiah

  • ‘Send me - let me be the carrier of the good news of the transforming power of Jesus, your son.

The Peace

Peace to you from God our heavenly Father. Peace from his Son Jesus Christ who is our peace. Peace from the Holy Spirit, the life-giver. The peace of the triune God be always with you and also with you. Let us offer one another a sign of peace

Holy Communion

The Lord is here His Spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. It is right to praise you, Father, Lord of all creation; in your love you made us for yourself. When we turned away you did not reject us, but came to meet us in your Son. You embraced us as your children and welcomed us to sit and eat with you. In Christ you shared our life that we might live in him and he in us. He opened his arms of love upon the cross and made for all the perfect sacrifice for sin. On the night he was betrayed, at supper with his friends he took bread, and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to them, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. Father, we do this in remembrance of him: his body is the bread of life. At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine, he gave you thanks, and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins; do this in remembrance of me. Father, we do this in remembrance of him: his blood is shed for all. As we proclaim his death and celebrate his rising in glory, send your Holy Spirit that this bread and this wine may be to us the body and blood of your dear Son. As we eat and drink these holy gifts make us one in Christ, our risen Lord. With your whole Church throughout the world, we offer you this sacrifice of praise and lift our voice to join the eternal song of heaven: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread. Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us peace. Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving.

Prayer of Spiritual Communion

Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits you have given me, for all the pains and insults you have borne for me. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen

Pentecost Reading Acts 2:1-13

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them.

All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem.

And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each.

Amazed and astonished, they asked, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome.

Both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs – in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.’ All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this mean?’ But others sneered and said, ‘They are filled with new wine.’

The Lord is here.

All His Spirit is with us.

Prayer for Personal Renewal

Be with us, Spirit of God;

All nothing can separate us from your love.

Breathe on us, breath of God;

All fill us with your saving power.

Speak in us, wisdom of God;

All bring strength, healing, and peace.

The Gloria

Glory be to God in heaven,

songs of joy and peace we bring,

thankful hearts and voices raising,

to creation’s Lord we sing:

Lord, we thank you, Lord we bless you,

glory be to God our King

glory be to God our King

Lamb of God, who on your shoulders

bore the load of this world’s sin,

only Son of God the Father,

you have brought us peace within:

Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy,

now your glorious reign begin,

now your glorious reign begin

You, O Son of God, are holy,

you we praise with one accord;

none in heaven or earth is like you,

only you are Christ the Lord

with the Father, and the Spirit,

ever worshipped and adored,

ever worshipped and adored.

The Collect

Holy Spirit, sent by the Father,

ignite in us your holy fire;

strengthen your children with

the gift of faith,

revive your church with the breath of love,

and renew the face of the earth,

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Song: No more Waiting, waiting..

Saying sorry to God

Christ our Passover lamb has been sacrificed

for us.

Let us therefore rejoice by putting

away all malice and evil

and confessing our sins

with a sincere and true heart.

Almighty God, our heavenly Father

we have sinned against you,

through our own fault,

in thought, and word and deed and in what we have left undone.

We are heartily sorry

and repent of our sins.

For your Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake,

forgive us all that is past;

and grant that we may serve you in newness of life

to the glory of your name.

Amen

May Almighty God

have mercy upon you,

forgive you your sins,

and bring you to everlasting life.

Amen

and kindle in them the fire of your love.

All Alleluia.

Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

Glory to you O Lord

John 15:26-27; 16:4-15 read by Antoinette

The Work of the Holy Spirit

26 “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me. 27 And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.

4 I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, 5 but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin, because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

This is the Gospel of the Lord

Praise to you O Christ

The Talk

A short reminder

What we believe

Let us declare our faith

in the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Christ died for our sins

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he was buried;

he was raised to life on the third day

in accordance with the Scriptures;

afterwards he appeared to his followers,

and to all the apostles:

this we have received,

and this we believe.

Amen.

The Peace

God has made us one in Christ.

He has set his seal upon us and, as a pledge of what is to come,

has given the Spirit to dwell in our hearts. Alleluia.

The peace of the Lord be always with you

All and also with you.

Holy Communion

The Lord is here

His Spirit is with us.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Almighty God, good Father to us all,

your face is turned towards your world.

In love you gave us Jesus your Son

to rescue us from sin and death.

Your Word goes out to call us home

to the city where angels sing your praise.

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of power and God of might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest

Father of all, we give you thanks

for every gift that comes from heaven.

To the darkness Jesus came as your light.

With signs of faith and words of hope

he touched untouchables with love and washed the guilty clean.

This is his story.

This is our song:

Hosanna in the highest.

The crowds came out to see your Son,

yet at the end they turned on him.

On the night he was betrayed

he came to table with his friends

to celebrate the freedom of your people.

This is his story.

This is our song:

Hosanna in the highest.

Jesus blessed you, Father, for the food;

he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and said:

This is my body, given for you all.

Jesus then gave thanks for the wine;

he took the cup, gave it and said:

This is my blood, shed for you all

for the forgiveness of sins.

Do this in remembrance of me.

This is our story.

This is our song:

Hosanna in the highest.

Therefore, Father, with this bread and this cup

we celebrate the cross

on which he died to set us free.

Defying death he rose again

and is alive with you to plead for us and all the world.

This is our story.

This is our song:

Hosanna in the highest.

Send your Spirit on us now

that by these gifts we may feed on Christ

with opened eyes and hearts on fire.

May we and all who share this food

offer ourselves to live for you

and be welcomed at your feast in heaven

where all creation worships you,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit:

Blessing and honour and glory and power

be yours for ever and ever. Amen.

We continue in the prayer that Jesus taught us… the Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours

now and for ever.

Amen.

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.

Though we are many we are one body because we all share in one bread.

Jesus, Lamb of God

have mercy on us.

Jesus bearer of our sins,

have mercy on us.

Jesus, redeemer of the world,

grant us peace.

Draw near with faith.

Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ

which he gave for you,

and his blood which he shed for you.

Eat and drink

in remembrance that he died for you,

and feed on him in your hearts

by faith with thanksgiving.

Commission

For fifty days we have celebrated the victory of our Lord Jesus Christ over the powers of sin and death. We have proclaimed God’s mighty acts and we have prayed that the power that was at work when God raised Jesus from the dead might be at work in us.

As part of God’s Church here at St Catherine’s and our friends at St Peter’s, I call upon you to live out what you proclaim.

Empowered by the Holy Spirit, will you dare to walk into God’s future, trusting him to be your guide?

All By the Spirit’s power, we will.

Will you dare to embrace each other and grow together in love?

All We will.

Will you dare to share your riches in common and minister to each other in need?

All We will.

Will you dare to pray for each other until your hearts beat with the longings of God?

All We will.

Will you dare to carry the light of Christ into the world’s dark places?

All We will.

The Blessing

May the Spirit,

who hovered over the waters when the world was created,

breathe into you the life he gives.

All Amen.

May the Spirit,

who overshadowed the Virgin when the eternal Son came among us,

make you joyful in the service of the Lord.

All Amen.

May the Spirit,

who set the Church on fire upon the Day of Pentecost,

bring the world alive with the love of the risen Christ.

All Amen.

And the blessing of God almighty,

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

be among you and remain with you always.

All Amen.

Before he went to heaven, Jesus had promised that the disciples would receive power when the Holy Spirit came to them. They were excited to find out what that would mean.

The disciples were waiting in Jerusalem for the Holy Spirit to come. When it came, it came with a new gift: languages! Acts 2:4 gives an example of words that bring people together in the best way possible.

The Bible tells us that on the day of Pentecost, the Jesus' followers were all gathered together in one place and God sent the Holy Spirit to give them the power to teach others about Jesus. Now, they couldn't see the Holy Spirit, so how did they know the Holy Spirit was there? The Bible says that they knew the Holy Spirit was there because they could hear the sound of a mighty rushing wind coming from heaven. They couldn't see the Holy Spirit, but they could hear the sound of the wind just as we can hear the air blowing from this fan. Then the Bible tells us that they saw what seemed to be flaming tongues of fire that came and rested on their heads. They couldn't see the Holy Spirit, but they knew that the Holy Spirit was there because they could see the flaming tongues of fire . Finally, the Bible tells us that they knew the Holy Spirit was there because they could feel his power. When they were filled with the Holy Spirit, he gave them the ability to speak in languages that they didn't even know, so that they could tell everyone about Jesus. They couldn't see the Holy Spirit, but they could feel his power in their life. The Holy Spirit is still with us today. We can't see him, but we can hear him as he speaks to our hearts, we can see his moving in our life, and we can feel the power of his presence as he guides us through each day.

When God started his church, he sent the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gave the gift of language: language that allowed all the listeners to hear about Jesus in a way they would understand. On that day, God was not only fulfilling his promise from Jesus to the disciples, He was fulfilling a much older plan to unite all the different people of the world. God used language to divide people at the Tower of Babel, and he used it to bring people together as he started his church.

God knew that words are powerful. The Holy Spirit helped Peter use his words to point others to Jesus. How can you use your words to do the same?

They were waiting, waiting, waiting………
