Ascension Day marks the first day of Thy Kingdom Come - an annual

invitation to prayer called by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York.

Lasting for eleven days, the focus is specific prayer in churches,

households and as individuals for friends, families, communities and

countries to come to know the saving love of God in Jesus Christ, and for

ourselves that empowered by God’s Spirit we would grow in confidence to

show and tell of God’s love.

There is a wide range of resources, including daily videos, to support

churches on the dedicated Thy Kingdom Come app (available on iOS and

God has gone up with a shout.

The Lord with the sound of a trumpet. Psalm 47:5

We meet in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit

Amen.

Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father

and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you

and also with you.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, for forty days we have been

celebrating with joyful hearts the resurrection of our Lord Jesus

Christ, his bursting from the tomb and his defeat of the power of

sin and death. He appeared to his disciples many times and told

them about the kingdom of God.

Today we recall how he left this earth and returned to his Father,

ascending into heaven to take his throne over all dominions and

powers. Trusting in his reign over all creation, and submitting to his

kingly yet loving rule, let us hear the story of his parting.

Collect for Thy Kingdom Come

Almighty God,

your ascended Son has sent us into the world

to preach the good news of your kingdom:

inspire us with your Spirit

and fill our hearts with the fire of your love,

that all who hear your Word

may be drawn to you,

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

The Ascension Reading: Acts of the Apostles 1.1-11

“In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do

and to teach until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving

instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. After

his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing

proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days

and spoke about the kingdom of God. While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the

Father. ‘This’, he said, ‘is what you have heard from me; for John baptized

with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days

from now. ’So when they had come together, they asked him, ‘Lord, is this

the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel? ’He replied, ‘It is not

for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own

authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon

you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria,

and to the ends of the earth. ’When he had said this, as they were

watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While

he was going and they were gazing up towards heaven, suddenly two men

in white robes stood by them. They said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you

stand looking up towards heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from

you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into

heaven.“ ’

At the end the reader says:

Alleluia. Christ is risen.

He is risen indeed. Alleluia.

The Great Commission: Matthew 28:16-20

Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus

had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but

some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in

heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make

disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of

the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I

have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of

the age.”

This is the word of the Lord

Thanks be to God.

We renew our commitment to our reigning Lord

Let us affirm the faith of the Church which Christ commissions us

to share with the world

Do you believe and trust in God the Father source of all being and

life, the One for whom we exist?

I believe and trust in Him.

Do you believe and trust in God the Son

who took our human nature,

died for us and rose again?

I believe and trust in Him.

Do you believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit who gives life to the

people of God

and makes Christ known in the world?

I believe and trust in Him.

This is the faith of the Church.

This is our faith.

We believe and trust in one God,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen

The Eucharistic Prayer

The Lord be with you

and also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give thanks and praise.

Almighty God, good Father to us all,

your face is turned towards your world.

In love you gave us Jesus your Son

to rescue us from sin and death.

Your Word goes out to call us home

to the city where angels sing your praise.

We join with them in heaven’s song:

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Father of all, we give you thanks for every gift that comes from heaven.

To the darkness Jesus came as your light.

With signs of faith and words of hope

he touched untouchables with love and washed the guilty clean.

This is his story.

This is our song:

Hosanna in the highest.

The crowds came out to see your Son,

yet at the end they turned on him.

On the night he was betrayed

he came to table with his friends

to celebrate the freedom of your people.

This is his story.

This is our song:

Hosanna in the highest.

Jesus blessed you, Father, for the food;

he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and said:

This is my body, given for you all.

Jesus then gave thanks for the wine;

he took the cup, gave it and said:

This is my blood, shed for you all

for the forgiveness of sins.

Do this in remembrance of me.

This is our story.

This is our song:

Hosanna in the highest.

Therefore, Father, with this bread and this cup

we celebrate the cross

on which he died to set us free.

Defying death he rose again

and is alive with you to plead for us and all the world.

This is our story.

This is our song:

Hosanna in the highest.

Send your Spirit on us now

that by these gifts we may feed on Christ

with opened eyes and hearts on fire.

May we and all who share this food

offer ourselves to live for you

and be welcomed at your feast in heaven

where all creation worships you,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit:

Blessing and honour and glory and power

be yours for ever and ever. Amen.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Every time we eat this bread

and drink this cup,

we proclaim the Lord’s death

until he comes.

Lord, we died with you on the cross.

Now we are raised to new life.

We were buried in your tomb.

Now we share in your resurrection.

Live in us, that we may live in you.

Prayer of Spiritual Communion

Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ,

for all the benefits you have given me,

for all the pains and insults you have borne for me.

Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally,

I ask you to come spiritually into my heart.

O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother,

may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly,

and follow you more nearly, day by day.

Amen.

Prayer after Communion

We thank you, Lord,

that you have fed us in this sacrament,

united us with Christ,

and given us a foretaste of the heavenly banquet

prepared for all peoples.

Amen.

Reading: Acts of the Apostles (1.12,13a,14)

Then the disciples returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day’s journey away. When they had entered the city, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying. They were constantly devoting themselves to prayer, together with certain women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers.

No responses are used at the end of the reading.

make us ready for your coming Spirit.

As we long for your renewing,

make us ready for your coming Spirit.

As we long for your equipping,

make us ready for your coming Spirit.

strengthen you to proclaim Christ Jesus as Lord.

Amen.

God the Son,

who is our great high priest passed into the heavens,

Amen.

God the Holy Spirit,

who pours out his abundant gifts upon the Church,

make you faithful servants of Christ our King.

Amen.

And the blessing of God almighty,

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

A little more about Thy Kingdom Come…

During the 11 days of Thy Kingdom Come, it is hoped that everyone who

takes part will:

  • Deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ

  • Pray for God’s spirit to work in the lives of those they know

  • Come to realise that every aspect of their life is the stuff of prayer

After the very first Ascension Day the disciples gathered with Mary,

constantly devoting themselves to prayer while they waited for the

outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Like them, our reliance on the

gift of the Holy Spirit is total – on our own we can do nothing.

Through the centuries Christians have gathered at that time to pray for

the coming of the Holy Spirit. ‘Thy Kingdom Come ’picks up this tradition.

Over the past three years more and more worshipping communities have

dedicated the days between Ascension and Pentecost to pray ‘Come Holy

Spirit’.

We are praying that the Spirit will inspire and equip us to share the Good

News of Jesus Christ with our friends and families, our communities and

networks. It has been amazing how many varied ways there have been in

which people from every tradition have taken up this challenge. The

effects have been remarkable.

It is our prayer that those who have not yet heard the Good News of Jesus

Christ and his love for the world will hear it for themselves, and respond

and follow Him. Specifically, we again invite each and every Christian

across the country to pray that God’s Spirit might work in the lives of 5

friends who have not responded with their ‘Yes ’to God’s call.

Whether you have joined in ‘Thy Kingdom Come ’before or not, we invite

you to take part – along with churches from over 65 different

denominations in over 170 countries around the world.

Welcome to our Communion Service.

Song: Come now is the time to worship https://youtu.be/NPWq8eM4lu8

Father God, we come to you because you turn doubt into hope, tears into laughter and fear into fearlessness. We come to you because on this Sunday and on every other day, we can say, ‘Jesus is alive!’ Amen.

We Say Sorry to God

Jesus Christ, risen Master and triumphant Lord,

we come to you in sorrow for our sins,

and confess to you our weakness and unbelief.

We have lived by our own strength,

and not by the power of your resurrection.

In your mercy, forgive us.

Lord, hear us and help us.

We have lived by the light of our own eyes,

as faithless and not believing.

In your mercy, forgive us.

Lord, hear us and help us.

We have lived for this world alone,

and doubted our home in heaven.

In your mercy, forgive us.

Lord, hear us and help us.

Almighty God,

who forgives all who truly repent,

have mercy upon you,

pardon and deliver you from all your sins,

confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,

and keep you in life eternal;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

The Collect

Risen Christ,

by the lakeside you renewed your call to your disciples:

help your Church to obey your command

and draw the nations to the fire of your love,

to the glory of God the Father.

Amen

What’s going on? I wonder how everyone is doing in week 7 of lockdown.

Let’s have a straw poll. Thumbs up if it’s good; thumbs down it not so good…

Haircuts?

Being fit?

Tidying the house or garden…

Working from home

Going to work

Not being able to work at all

Doing more on the computer

Getting on with friends or family

I guess it’s all a bit of a mixed picture. Some good and some not so great.

The Bible readings in the weeks after Easter tell us what happened next to Jesus’ followers.

Who can remember what we have heard?

Week 1

Week 2

Week 3

Week 4

And we can do the same- what’s a thumbs up and what’s thumbs down?

What does this tell us about what’s it like being a disciple?

First Reading: Acts 17:22-31 Read by Lin

22 Paul stood up in front of the city council and said, “I see that in every way you Athenians are very religious. 23 For as I walked through your city and looked at the places where you worship, I found an altar on which is written, ‘To an Unknown God.’ That which you worship, then, even though you do not know it, is what I now proclaim to you. 24 God, who made the world and everything in it, is Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples made by human hands. 25 Nor does he need anything that we can supply by working for him, since it is he himself who gives life and breath and everything else to everyone. 26 From one human being he created all races of people and made them live throughout the whole earth. He himself fixed beforehand the exact times and the limits of the places where they would live. 27 He did this so that they would look for him, and perhaps find him as they felt around for him. Yet God is actually not far from any one of us; 28 as someone has said,

‘In him we live and move and exist.’

It is as some of your poets have said, ‘We too are his children.’

29 Since we are God's children, we should not suppose that his nature is anything like an image of gold or silver or stone, shaped by human art and skill. 30 God has overlooked the times when people did not know him, but now he commands all of them everywhere to turn away from their evil ways. 31 For he has fixed a day in which he will judge the whole world with justice by means of a man he has chosen. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising that man from death!”

Song: Spirit of the Living God https://youtu.be/ccaFnRYLTok

Gospel Reading : John 14:15-21 https://youtu.be/cB9XO2yXCtY

15 “If you love me, you will obey my commandments. 16 I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, who will stay with you forever. 17 He is the Spirit, who reveals the truth about God. The world cannot receive him, because it cannot see him or know him. But you know him, because he remains with you and is in you.

18 “When I go, you will not be left all alone; I will come back to you. 19 In a little while the world will see me no more, but you will see me; and because I live, you also will live. 20 When that day comes, you will know that I am in my Father and that you are in me, just as I am in you.

21 “Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. My Father will love those who love me; I too will love them and reveal myself to them.”

Sermon:

We’ve taken a great leap forward in time from Stephen’s martyrdom last week. A young man called Saul was a bystander approving of the violence. And now we’re with that same man, converted and transformed, travelling across the whole of the known world to tell people about Jesus. A huge change.

Actually Paul’s trip to Athens isn’t even his first journey.

Map of Paul's first journey showing that he never got beyond modern day Turkey
Map of Paul's second missionary journey showing that he made it all the way to Athens, Greece this time stopping in several other Greek cities along the way.

Paul is a totally different person.

A drawing showing Paul as a confident public speaker in front of the temples in Greece.

What do we focus on?

We could reflect on God’s power at work in Paul. He was (by his own account) a pretty terrible person. A violent man, attacking other people changes into someone who really puts himself out for the good of all. He was against anyone who followed Jesus but now wholeheartedly teaches others about Jesus.

God can do amazing things, turn people’s lives round

But also lots of difficult dangerous frustrating things – What do you know about Paul’s life?

Beatings

Jail

Persecution

Hunger and thirst

Disasters

Not getting on with other Christians..

What does Paul do through all of this?

Keep going. Keep going and doing what he’s called to do. Have a look back at our first reading. What does he sound like to you?

What’s this got to do with us?

What does the gospel reading tell us?

The person who loves God and wants to follow, will receive the Holy Spirit.

Who transformed Paul? Who sustained Paul? The Holy Spirit- who is available to us today.

What we believe

Let us declare our faith in the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Christ died for our sins

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he was buried;

he was raised to life on the third day

in accordance with the Scriptures;

afterwards he appeared to his followers,

and to all the apostles:

This we have received,

and this we believe.

Amen.

The Peace

The Risen Christ came and stood among

his disciples and said,

Peace be with you.

Then they were glad when they saw the Lord.

Alleluia

The peace of the Lord be always with you.

And also with you.

Offertory Hymn: Before the Throne of God Above https://youtu.be/-50pFs0hRpg

The Lord is here

His Spirit is with us.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give thanks and praise.

Lord of all life,

you created the universe,

where all living things reflect your glory.

You give us this great and beautiful earth,

to discover and to cherish.

You give us happy times

and things to celebrate.

In these we taste your kingdom,

a feast for all your children.

You made us all,

each wonderfully different,

to join with the angels

and sing your praise:

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord,

Holy is the Lord God Almighty: x2

Who was and is and is to come,

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord

We thank you, loving Father,

because, when we turned away,

you sent Jesus, your Son.

He gave his life for us on the cross

and shows us the way to live.

Send your Holy Spirit

that these gifts of bread and wine

may be for us Christ’s body and his blood.

On the night before he died,

when darkness had fallen,

Jesus took bread.

He gave thanks, broke it,

and shared it with his disciples, saying:

‘This is my body, given for you.

Do this to remember me.’

After they had eaten, he took the cup of wine,

gave thanks, and shared it with his disciples, saying:

‘This is my blood, poured out for you and for many,

for the forgiveness of sins.’

So Father, with this bread and this cup

we celebrate his love, his death, his risen life.

As you feed us with these gifts,

send your Holy Spirit,

and change us more and more

to be like Jesus our Saviour.

Help us, Father, to love one another,

as we look forward to that day

when suffering is ended,

and all creation is gathered in your loving arms.

And now with St Catherine and all your saints

we give you glory,

through Jesus Christ,

in the strength of the Spirit,

today and for ever.

Amen.

We continue with the words of The Lord's Prayer:

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours

now and for ever. Amen

We break this bread

to share in the body of Christ.

Though we are many, we are one body,

because we all share in one bread.

Every time we eat this bread

and drink this cup,

we proclaim the Lord’s death

until he comes.

Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.

Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Prayer of spiritual communion

Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ,

for all the benefits you have given me,

for all the pains and insults you have borne for me.

Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally,

I ask you to come spiritually into my heart.

O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother,

may I know you more clearly,

love you more dearly,

and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen

The Blessing

The God of peace,

who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus,

that great shepherd of the sheep,

make you perfect in every good work to do his will;

and the blessing of God Almighty, Father, Son

and Holy Spirit be with you now

and remain with you always. Amen.

He is not here. He is risen.

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Alleluia, alleluia.

In the name of Christ. Amen. Alleluia, alleluia.

John 14:15-21 Jesus promises to send us the Holy Spirit.

Games:

Three legged walk

Find someone to pair up with. Tie your inside legs together with a scarf.

Try walking around- how does it feel to have someone next to you?

To make this work- you have to work together.

We try to walk with the Holy Spirit – we may have to work at that too by listening to God’s words and putting them into practise,

Kites

We can’t see the wind but we know it’s there. We can’t see the Holy Spirit, but we know he is with us.

Make some simple kites to fly in the wind. https://www.instructables.com/id/Very-Simple-Kite/

Or one like this:

Song: We are marching in the Light of God

And Get Marching- can you do this tied to your partner?

Here’s our story:

John 14:15-21 The Promise of the Holy Spirit

Jesus said: “If you love me, you will obey my commandments. I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, who will stay with you forever.

What does Jesus want us to do? (If we love Jesus we will do what he says…)

Think about what Jesus asks us to do e.g.

Love each other;

Share what we can

Say sorry when we’re wrong

Don’t fight back

Can you act an idea out for someone to guess? Or take a picture so we can all see?

Make: Jesus tells us to love one another

Jesus’ big instruction to us is – to love one another. If we love one another, it can show what Jesus is like.

Make a heart badge.

White heart inside and red heart glued on top but cut open to make 2 doors.

You can write LOVE inside

Pray that others would love and know Jesus

Make a people paper chain.

Think about four people who you would like to know Jesus better. As you make the people paper chain pray for each one.

Paper doll chain template and instructions.
